From
ideas to patents
We come into contact with 300 to 400 patented inventions
every day, though we tend to notice only the few that are somehow
spectacular. Patents provide economic protection for inventions
which often take several years to develop; they also facilitate
technology transfer and spark further innovation across the world.
In the exhibition "The Wheel of Invention –
From ideas to patents", the European Patent Office gives an
insight into some exciting aspects of its work and presents revolutionary
high-tech exhibits along with unconventional technologies. Visitors
get to see that there can be a whole range of different solutions
to a technical problem. The exhibits demonstrate the practical application
of patented products.
The underlying theme of this unconventional show
is the provocative notion of "(not) reinventing the wheel".
Touching on a wide range of scientific and technological innovation,
this show has a specially devised programme of tours and further
attractions for young people in the intellectually demanding age
range 16 to 19.
The subjects covered reflect young adults'
life experience and interests. Medicine, nutrition, sport, everyday
life, mobility, information, the environment and production are
the invention categories presented. The presentation methods are
designed to explain the technological principles in an accessible
way while avoiding an overly didactic approach. Through a stimulating
mix of exhibits, simulations, interactive features, multimedia,
short films and visuals, the walk-in exhibition modules open up
a world of learning and offer new perspectives on the often surprising
applications of patents.
